tips to protect teen drivers

If you have a teenage son or daughter who has reached the momentous milestone of becoming a new driver, you are probably both excited and nervous. This is an immense responsibility and, if he or she does not take it seriously, accidents will surely happen. Being able to drive is a privilege and, as a parent, it is important to teach your children that this privilege must not be mishandled or abused. To keep your teenager safe on the road and to ensure that, going forward, he or she is a truly responsible and independent individual, consider some of the following safety tips.

  1. Enroll them in a safe driving course: Young drivers inherently lack the experience older drivers develop over time. To compensate for this, give them the chance to practice by enrolling your teenage kids in a safe driving course to help them become more effective and skillful drivers. There are many approved courses that can either be taken in person or online, which last anywhere from 6 to 12 hours. You might even be able to score a car insurance discount for it.
  2. Get a safe car for your teen drivers: When you choose a car for the teen drivers in your household, be sure to invest in the safest car you can afford. Look for safety features like front and side airbags, antilock brakes, and electronic stability control. These features can be lifesavers and, of course, you want to do everything to keep your children safe. Buying a safer vehicle also lowers your insurance premium.
  3. Enforce your own graduated licensing program: Your state might have a pretty good licensing program of its own, but you might want to compose your own set of rules until you are confident in your teenager’s driving skills. These can include restricting nighttime driving, limiting the number of passengers, and supervising your teen’s driving.
  4. Have an honest conversation: Teenage drivers are often so excited to hit the road and enjoy their newfound independence that they do not grasp the gravity of it. Make sure the teenage drivers in your household understand that driving is a privilege. Clearly tell them what is expected of them and the consequences for failing to meet them. Discuss the dangers of alcohol usage as well as dangerous driving habits such as texting or speeding. You want to be absolutely certain you are all on the same page.
  5. Lead by example: You can set up as many rules as you want, but if you are failing to lead by example and practice what you preach, your children will not take any of it seriously. How can they be expected not to text and drive when you do it in front of them? Practice safe driving habits and they will be more inclined to do the same.
  6. Talk about the costs of driving: Chances are that, if your children have to pay for some car-related expenses, they will be more responsible. Consider having them pay a portion of the monthly insurance premiums, gas, oil changes, and other such expenses. It does not have to be something required of them regularly as long as they are sharing in the costs occasionally.
  7. Enforce a zero-tolerance drinking rule: Drinking and driving is not only against the law, but it also claims the lives of many young drivers. Instead of avoiding the subject, make sure your teens understand they are absolutely not allowed to drink and drive and, if you find out they have participated in this risky behavior, let them know there will be severe consequences.
  8. Always wear a seatbelt: This should be an unconscious effort that all drivers and passengers automatically do. It only takes a second, but it could potentially save one’s life in an accident, so impress the importance of it to your teens and, once again, always exhibit the same behavior when you are a driver.
