Three Useful Halloween Safety Tips
Halloween is a holiday filled with unique traditions and lively festivities and celebrations that make for a fun atmosphere. But before donning your costume and taking part in your traditions, be sure to follow these important and valuable safety tips to not only keep yourself safe, but those around you as well.
Don’t Drink and Drive
If you plan on partaking in adult beverages during your Halloween celebrations, make sure you plan ahead on your transportation if you have to travel. Do not drink and drive. Not only is it illegal to do so, but it places your own safety and the safety of those around you at a serious risk. If you know you will be partaking, either travel with a designated driver, or get a ride from a ride sharing service like Uber or Lyft. The price of the fare is nothing compared to the costs of a potential injury caused by a drunk driver.
Trick-or-Treat Sensibly
Trick-or-treating is a fun tradition that kids and parents can enjoy together. However, there are some practices that you should stick to in order to avoid increasing the chances of either you or your children getting injured. Always stick to a neighborhood when trick-or-treating and away from main roads. As discussed earlier, Halloween parties can usually feature alcohol and that may lead to drunk drivers. Staying to a neighborhood reduces your chances of coming across one of these drivers. Also, stick to well-lit areas when walking around in order to avoid not being seen by an unsuspecting driver, drunk or not.
When you return, inspect your children’s candy for any pieces that may appear to have been opened or tampered with and immediately dispose of them.
Prepare Your Home
If you wish to avoid a costly premises liability lawsuit against you, exercise some extra precautions to reduce the chances of injury from any potentially dangerous property features at your home. If you have a swimming pool or are doing work on your property, be sure to secure them so they cannot be accessed by visitors. If this is not possible, place signs or other indicators to make visitors aware of any potential hazards, like an open trench.
Likewise, if you have any pets, be sure they cannot escape and attack visitors. Sometimes dogs do not recognize that the visitors to their territory are well-meaning, and will become defensive with little provocation. Property owners are liable for any dog bites should their pet attack.
