Which Cars Are Most Often Involved in Crashes?
Every car owner wants to know that their vehicle is safe and reliable. A car’s age, model, and safety features all make a difference in how safe it is to drive and how much protection is provided in the event of a collision.
Vehicle manufacturers routinely test and implement new safety features and release them with newer models. The fact remains, however, that specific makes and models are involved in collisions more frequently than others.
Cars with the Highest Number of Crashes Nationwide
The car insurance company Insurify studied different vehicle types to determine which models were involved in the highest number of collisions.
Of all the vehicles on the road in the United States, 13.64% on average have been involved in at least one at-fault car accident. When a specific vehicle model has an average crash rate higher than the national average, the safety of this car needs to be questioned and investigated.
According to the study, the five car models most likely to have an accident on the road include:
- Subaru WRX
- Infiniti Q50
- Hyundai Elantra GT
- Honda HR-V
- Subaru Crosstrek
Each of these models has an average crash rate well above the national average, indicating noteworthy safety concerns with these vehicles and their drivers. In 2019, the study determined that the two most dangerous car models were the Honda HR-V, at-fault in 25.7% of accidents, and the Subaru Crosstrek, at-fault in 25.81% of accidents.
Common Reasons Why These Cars Crash
You may find these results surprising, especially because Subaru claimed that the Crosstrek was one of the safest and most durable cars on the road. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety even gave this model the highest safety rating possible. Despite this high praise, an extremely high number of car accidents involve a Subaru Crosstrek.
Even though the car is well-made, the Crosstrek may be involved in more accidents because of the drivers who purchase this model. The Crosstrek is less expensive than most other SUVs, meaning that younger drivers are more likely to be able to afford them. Young adults are often less experienced drivers and are statistically more likely to be involved in an accident because of inexperience or reckless driving behavior.
