The History & Background of Jefferson City

Jefferson City, Tennessee began in 1788 as a tiny community that called itself Mossy Creek after the brilliant emerald moss that lined the banks of a small river. Early settlers used the waterway for several grist mills, and the population grew rapidly. This was the site of the infamous Battle of Mossy Creek during the Civil War. Residents changed the name to Jefferson City in 1901, as they were often called “mossbacks” when they traveled to other towns.
